Last week, tech news platforms and writers reported that Touch ID was being phased out. Apple responded by mocking the rumors and suggesting that Touch ID was not going away anytime soon.

While Apple has been exploring various ways to enhance the security features of its iPhones, it is highly doubtful that Touch ID will make a comeback. Instead, the company is expected to focus on advancing the under-display Face ID technology, which has already proven to be a secure and reliable authentication method. Shifting towards this technology will not only make the unlocking process faster and more convenient, but it will also keep up with the current trend of larger screen-to-body ratios, which leaves little room for a physical home button.

Although Apple has been granted a patent for under-display fingerprint identification, rumors indicate that this technology may not be used in upcoming Apple products. It is reported that the next iPhone will not feature Touch ID, which suggests that Apple may be moving towards other forms of biometric authentication.

The iPhone SE 3rd generation is the only model with Touch ID, but production is limited. The Touch ID chip is made using an 8-inch process with most equipment sealed, making mass production challenging.

According to recent reports, the upcoming iPhone SE 4 model is not likely to come with a fingerprint scanner. Instead, it is expected to have a similar design to the iPhone 14 and will be equipped with Face ID, USB-C port, and side buttons. Additionally, there is speculation that Apple may discontinue iPhone models that support Touch ID. This move towards facial recognition technology could be a significant shift for Apple, as they have previously relied on fingerprint scanners as a primary security feature. Nonetheless, it is an exciting development that will undoubtedly provide a more sophisticated user experience.

It is unlikely that Touch ID to make a comeback on the iPhone 16 or iPhone 16 Pro. However, rumors suggest that it may return in the future with an under-display mode.

Apple has recently launched an advanced technology that can identify and authenticate a user's fingerprint with improved features. The innovative under-display sensor integrates shortwave infrared technology and an advanced optical imaging system that can accurately detect vein patterns, blood oxygen levels, pulse rate, as well as environmental factors such as gloves and humidity, among others. This groundbreaking technology is considered to be a significant upgrade to Touch ID, facilitating a more secure and dependable user authentication experience.

Rumor has it that an iPhone featuring under-display fingerprint identification technology will be released as early as 2026, but keep in mind that early news is subject to a lot of ambiguity, since patent filings and actual product releases are two different things.

In reality, the current majority perception is that Apple’s next intention is to implement under-display Face ID technology, which would include changing the present iPhone’s “pill” shaped hole to a “round” cutout and moving the Face ID sensor to the bottom of the screen. According to display industry specialist Ross Young’s roadmap, this transformation will occur as early as the iPhone 17 Pro models in 2025.

In comparison to the under-display Touch ID, I personnally prefer the under-display Face ID. Face ID is fast and comfortable in everyday usage, with support for mask-wearing and landscape unlocking, unless you need to unlock your phone without looking at the screen, such as in your pocket.

Which biometric approach, Touch ID or Face ID, would you prefer to use? Or do you want everything? I would like to know your preference.
