As for me, it’s always a must lol.

… glass however doesn’t wear well and has gathered a tidy amount of micro scratches over the months. I have never been one to use cases or screen protectors, but this is the second time in consecutive years that these have proven a problem so this year I may weaken and start to use a screen protector & case.
